Vivo d’Orcia
A quiet mountain village surrounded by springs, woodland and the upper slopes of Monte Amiata.
Vivo d’Orcia is a small village in the municipality of Castiglione d’Orcia, on the wooded slopes of Monte Amiata in southern Tuscany. Its cooler landscape, water sources and religious history differ from the open fields usually associated with the Val d’Orcia.

The village and its water
The settlement lies near the sources of the Vivo stream, a tributary of the Orcia. Water from this area has long been important to the territory and to the Siena aqueduct system. Woodland and flowing water give Vivo d’Orcia a distinctly mountain character.

Camaldolese heritage
A Camaldolese hermitage was founded in the area in the early eleventh century and is traditionally associated with Saint Romuald. The later Eremo del Vivo and surrounding estate preserve traces of this religious history, but parts of the complex are privately owned. Visitors should not assume that estate buildings or the so-called castle are freely open.

Ermicciolo and walking
The Romanesque oratory known as the Ermicciolo stands in woodland south of the village, close to a source of the Vivo. Paths in this area can be damp, uneven and slippery, particularly after rain or in winter. Wear suitable footwear and verify current access and trail conditions locally.
A quiet base on Monte Amiata
Vivo d’Orcia is better approached as a small mountain village and walking area than as a collection of ticketed attractions. Shops and food services are limited and may use seasonal schedules. Bring water and do not rely on every business being open outside weekends or summer.
