The historic centre and Rocca Aldobrandesca

The medieval centre rises around Piazza il Vecchietta, named after the Renaissance artist Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Il Vecchietta. Above the village are the remains of the Rocca Aldobrandesca. The climb through the old streets is part of the visit, and the viewpoints are especially rewarding in clear weather.

Rocca di Tentennano

The imposing Rocca di Tentennano is not in the centre of Castiglione itself: it stands in the nearby hamlet of Rocca d’Orcia. The fortress developed between the eleventh and twelfth centuries and later played an important role in the long rivalry for control of this strategic territory. Opening arrangements can change, so check locally before planning an interior visit.

Sala d’Arte San Giovanni

The former church of San Giovanni contains a small collection of works connected with artists of the Sienese school. Opening days are limited in some periods; the local tourist information office can confirm access.

Val d’Orcia and nearby thermal areas

Castiglione d’Orcia is surrounded by the cultivated hills, farm roads and cypress-lined views associated with the Val d’Orcia. The landscape is lived-in agricultural land, so use marked routes, respect private property and avoid blocking rural access roads.

Bagni San Filippo is a separate locality on the eastern side of Monte Amiata, known for its thermal springs and pale mineral formations. Access rules, parking and the condition of paths around Fosso Bianco can vary. Commercial thermal facilities and natural areas are managed separately; verify current conditions rather than assuming unrestricted bathing.

Practical information

The streets are steep and often paved with stone. Comfortable footwear is advisable, and visitors with reduced mobility should check the most suitable parking and access points in advance. A car is the simplest way to link the scattered villages, although parking inside historic centres is restricted. Spring and autumn usually offer mild walking weather; summer afternoons can be hot and exposed.

Allow time to distinguish Castiglione d’Orcia from Rocca d’Orcia: they are close but not the same village, and each has its own fortress and viewpoints.
