The Monte Subasio Regional Park protects the mountain landscape rising above Assisi and extending towards Spello, Nocera Umbra and Valtopina. It is a regional protected area, not an Italian national park. Its scenery combines woodland, olive-covered lower slopes, open summit meadows and places closely associated with the life of Saint Francis.
Landscape and protected area
The park was established in 1995 to protect the environmental, historical and cultural value of Monte Subasio. The mountain’s pale limestone has shaped both the landscape and the architecture of nearby towns. Wooded slopes give way to broad grassland near the summit, with views across the Umbrian valley in clear weather.
The high ground includes shallow depressions known as the Mortari, formed in the limestone. These natural features should be observed from established routes without leaving tracks or disturbing the grassland.

Walking and cycling
A network of marked itineraries crosses the park, including routes between Assisi and Spello and paths connecting villages, woodland and the upper slopes. Conditions vary considerably: some walks are gentle, while longer routes involve sustained climbs, exposed sections and limited shade.
Use an up-to-date official map, choose a route suited to the group and carry water. Mobile coverage cannot be assumed everywhere. Mountain bikes should remain on routes where cycling is permitted, and all visitors should respect signs, livestock, gates and restrictions intended to protect the area.

The Eremo delle Carceri is a Franciscan hermitage in woodland above Assisi. It is reached by road or on foot, depending on the chosen itinerary. The site remains a place of worship and contemplation, so quiet behaviour and appropriate clothing are expected. Opening and access arrangements should be checked independently from the park’s trail information.
Assisi, Spello and the park
Assisi lies on the western slope of Monte Subasio and is the most common starting point for exploring the park. Spello, on the southern side, offers another approach and can be linked to Assisi by established walking itineraries. Nocera Umbra and Valtopina are also within the protected-area plan, but journeys between different sectors may require a car.
La Verna is not a nearby Monte Subasio trail destination: it is a separate Franciscan sanctuary in Tuscany. Visitors should also avoid treating commercial quad-bike or paragliding excursions as normal park activities without first confirming authorisation, location, weather and operator credentials.
Practical advice
Weather on the summit can be cooler, windier and more changeable than in Assisi. Carry an extra layer, sun protection and sufficient water. After rain or in winter, paths may be muddy, icy or obscured; fog can reduce visibility quickly.
Parking capacity and road access vary by sector. Before setting out, consult current information from the Regione Umbria or the relevant municipality, especially during events, fire-risk periods or adverse weather. Take all waste away and leave flowers, rocks and other natural material where they are.
