A historic spa town spread along the Lima valley in the hills north of Lucca.
Bagni di Lucca is a historic spa town in the Serchio and Lima valleys, north of Lucca. The name refers to a municipality made up of several settlements rather than to a single open-air hot spring. Its thermal tradition is centred on the springs of the Corsena hill and the buildings around Bagni Caldi.
The local springs were known for centuries and Bagni di Lucca became an important European spa destination, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Aristocrats, diplomats, writers and musicians stayed in the area, leaving a distinctive architectural and cultural legacy.
The Terme Bagno Bernabò complex uses naturally heated mineral water from local springs. Historic bathing rooms and a natural steam grotto form part of the thermal heritage. This is a managed spa establishment, not a landscape of freely accessible pools or cascading hot springs.
Services, admission arrangements and opening periods can change. Contact the establishment or consult the official Municipality of Bagni di Lucca information page before making a special journey. Any therapeutic treatment should be discussed directly with qualified medical and spa staff; this guide does not make health or curative claims.

What else to see
The town’s spa-era history is visible beyond the baths. Ponte a Serraglio and La Villa contain villas, gardens and buildings connected with the period when Bagni di Lucca attracted an international community. Points of interest include the former Royal Casino, the Anglican Church and the English Cemetery.
The Ponte delle Catene, designed by Lorenzo Nottolini, spans the Lima near Fornoli and is an important example of 19th-century engineering. The river valley, wooded slopes and surrounding villages also make the area a useful base for exploring the Garfagnana and the middle Serchio Valley.

Do not arrive expecting a conventional outdoor thermal park. If bathing or spa treatments are your priority, confirm availability, booking requirements, prices and any medical restrictions in advance. Bring suitable footwear for exploring the hilly settlements and allow time to travel between the different parts of the municipality.
A half day is enough for a short visit to the historic centre and main landmarks. A longer stay makes sense if you have reserved a spa service or plan to combine Bagni di Lucca with Borgo a Mozzano, the Garfagnana or the natural landscapes around the Lima Valley.
Why visit
Bagni di Lucca is best appreciated as a historic thermal town with a layered landscape, not simply as a set of hot pools. Its appeal lies in the combination of spa heritage, 19th-century architecture, river scenery and access to the mountain valleys north of Lucca.
