A working Adriatic port city of hilltop monuments, Roman heritage and dramatic coastal viewpoints.

Ancona is the regional capital of the Marche and a working Adriatic port. Founded by Greek settlers and developed as a Roman harbour, the city spreads across hills around the waterfront. Its principal sights are not concentrated in a single flat centre, so a visit involves slopes and separate districts.
San Ciriaco Cathedral
The Cathedral of San Ciriaco stands on Guasco Hill above the port, on a site with earlier sacred structures. Its position offers wide views, but opening may be affected by worship and religious events. The approach is steep; visitors with limited mobility should check vehicle and parking access.

The Roman harbour
The Arch of Trajan rises near the port and commemorates improvements made to the Roman harbour. It stands within an active maritime zone rather than an isolated archaeological park. Follow signed pedestrian routes and respect any security restrictions around port operations.
The nearby Mole Vanvitelliana, also known as the Lazzaretto, is an eighteenth-century pentagonal complex used for exhibitions and cultural events. Interior access depends on the programme.

Museums and historic streets
The National Archaeological Museum of the Marche presents regional finds from prehistory through the Roman period. Opening days and galleries can change. In the centre, Piazza del Plebiscito and surrounding lanes provide a more intimate contrast with the commercial waterfront.
Passetto and the coast
The Passetto Monument overlooks the Adriatic from the end of Viale della Vittoria. Steps and, when operating, a lift descend towards the rocky shore and traditional fishermen’s caves. The caves are private and should not be entered without permission. This is a rocky bathing area, not a broad sandy beach, and sea conditions require caution.
Practical information
Ancona’s railway station is outside the most historic districts but connected by local transport. Ferries and cruise movements can make port traffic busy. Drivers should check restricted zones and parking before entering the centre.
Allow a full day to link the cathedral hill, port monuments, museum and Passetto. Summer heat makes the climbs more demanding. Check current museum hours, lift operation and waterfront access, especially during events or port-security changes.
