The lighthouse and headland

The active Punta Sottile lighthouse remains a navigational landmark and a distinctive feature of Favignana’s western shoreline. It is best appreciated from the surrounding public landscape; access to the lighthouse interior should not be assumed unless an official visit is specifically announced.

The headland is particularly popular near sunset, when the view opens west across the sea. Visibility and colour depend on weather, and visitors should bring a light for the return if leaving after dusk.

Sea access

Access to the water around Punta Sottile is mainly from rocky paths and small natural entry points, with a limited beach area nearby. Surfaces can be sharp, uneven or slippery, and conditions are not comparable to an equipped sandy beach.

Check wind and sea state before swimming, wear suitable footwear and supervise children closely. Lifeguards, shade, toilets and other beach services should not be expected at the headland.

Reaching Punta Sottile

The area is west of Favignana town and can be reached by the island road network. Bicycles, scooters, taxis and rental vehicles may be available in town, but supply and operating rules change seasonally. Reserve transport directly with a current local operator rather than assuming availability on arrival.

Traffic, parking controls and access restrictions may apply during the busiest periods. Park only where permitted and keep roads and private entrances clear.

A focused visit

Punta Sottile should not be used as a catch-all page for every beach and cave on Favignana. Cala Rossa, Bue Marino and other well-known coastal areas lie elsewhere on the island and require separate journeys. The appeal here is the western landscape, the lighthouse and the sunset.

For local orientation, see the Favignana visitor guide to Punta Sottile and Cala Grande. Confirm current conditions locally, take all rubbish away and avoid crossing private land or protected coastal vegetation.
