Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve

Sicily’s first nature reserve, linking rugged coastal paths with small coves and mountain scenery.

Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve protects a rugged stretch of north-western Sicily between Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito Lo Capo. Coastal paths cross Mediterranean scrub and lead toward a series of small rocky coves, with no road running through the protected area.

A protected coastal landscape

Established in 1981 after a major public campaign against a proposed coastal road, Lo Zingaro became Sicily’s first nature reserve. Its habitats range from rocky shore and dwarf-palm scrub to valleys, rural landscapes and Mediterranean woodland.

Important access update

The reserve was heavily affected by a fire in 2025. An official Regione Siciliana notice announced a partial reopening from 14 March 2026, initially through the southern entrance only, with a limited section of the coastal route available. Restoration and safety work may continue, and the accessible entrances and distances can change.

Before travelling, check the regional reopening notice and the reserve’s official visitor-information page for the latest status. Do not rely on an older guide that promises access from both entrances or lists every cove as reachable.

Walking conditions

There is no vehicle route inside the reserve. Trails are stony, exposed and often steep, with little shade. Proper walking shoes are strongly recommended; flip-flops are unsuitable. Carry sufficient drinking water and food, use sun protection and allow time for the return walk.

Swimming may be possible only where access is authorised and sea conditions are safe. The coves are natural shorelines, not serviced beach clubs, and lifeguard cover should not be assumed.

Tickets and services

Admission rules and fees can change. The reserve currently asks visitors to use electronic payment rather than cash, but this should be checked again before arrival. Museums, visitor centres and guided services may operate only when the relevant section is open.

Responsible visiting

Follow closures and ranger instructions, remain on authorised paths and never enter fire-damaged or restricted areas. Do not light fires, remove plants, disturb wildlife or leave waste. During periods of heat, strong wind or high fire risk, access may be limited at short notice.
