Frasassi Caves

A vast limestone cave system explored through guided underground routes in the Marche.

The Frasassi Caves form an extensive karst system near Genga in the Marche. The public route passes through a sequence of large chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other mineral formations, beginning with the immense Abisso Ancona.

Discovery and geology

Local speleologists explored parts of the Frasassi system during the 20th century. In 1971, the discovery of the entrance leading to Abisso Ancona revealed the scale of the chambers that later became the focus of the tourist route.

The caves developed within limestone through complex interaction between groundwater, rock and sulphur-bearing waters. Mineral-rich droplets continue to deposit calcite and slowly build the visible formations. The Sentino River runs through the gorge outside, but it should not be described as simply carving every chamber or as mixing directly with rainwater to create the entire system.

The standard tourist visit

Entry to the public caves is by organised tour rather than independent exploration. Lighting and constructed walkways provide access to the principal chambers, where guides explain formations such as the Giants, the Obelisk and the organ-pipe structures.

The cave remains cool and humid throughout the year. A light jacket and shoes with good grip are useful even in summer. Visitors should stay on the route, avoid touching formations and follow photography instructions given by staff.

Tickets, parking and shuttle

The main parking and ticket area is at San Vittore delle Chiuse/La Cuna, not directly at the cave entrance. Visitors with online tickets should still arrive in time to use the included shuttle to the entrance. Late arrival can invalidate the booked slot, and tickets are subject to the operator’s refund conditions.

Speleological routes

The blue and red speleological routes are separate from the standard tourist visit. They involve confined passages and require advance booking, supplied equipment and compliance with age, health and safety requirements. They should not be presented as an automatic extension available to every ticket holder.

Accessibility and animals

Visitors with reduced mobility should check the current accessible portion of the route directly with the caves before booking. The conditions for animals are restrictive: dogs are not admitted simply on a lead, and the official site specifies carriers for permitted entry as well as a limited number of unstaffed external boxes for larger dogs.

Nearby

San Vittore alle Chiuse, the local museum and the sanctuary in the Frasassi gorge are separate attractions with their own tickets and access arrangements. Do not assume they are included automatically with a cave visit.
