Filicudi Guide | Aeolian Islands, Sicily

Capo Graziano, FilicudiFilicudi is the most magnetic island of the Eolian Archipelago. It is located north of Sicily and it is listed among UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is a wild island, ideal for nature lovers.

Filicudi, like all the Aeolian Islands, has volcanic origins and a very long history, dating back to prehistoric times.

Filicudi Port

Filicudi Port is a tiny village on the sea, where ferries dock. You can find shops, mini markets and restaurants, or you can taste a delicious jasmine ice cream in the terrace of Santamaria bar. There is also a beach where it is possible to swim: everywhere in Filicudi the water is transparent and pure, even in the port. Along the promenade you can also find boat and scooter rentals. And if you stay until night, you will see Stromboli volcano explosions at the horizon.

Pecorini fisher village

Pecorini, FilicudiOn the other side of the island, there is the charming fishing village of Pecorini –typical houses built in front of the endless Mediterranean sea. In Pecorini there are a couple of cozy shops, a mini market, the most typical restaurant of the island (La Sirena) and the best nightclub of Filicudi (Filicudi Yachting Club), an observation platform on the sea, where you can enjoy an extraordinary cuisine or, in summer, dance until dawn. At sunset Pecorini is the place to be: here people meet to have a beer at Triolo, after a day at the beach.

Le punte Rocks

Le Punte is the best place on the island to enjoy the sea. Close to Filicudi Port, Le Punte is a system of volcanic rocks, ideal for sunbathing and snorkeling. The water is warm and transparent, and the sun lighten this shore until sunset. Here there are neither bar nor shops, just the astonishing beauty of nature.

Belvedere – The panoramic path

Belvedere, FilicudiAnother place to be at sunset is the panoramic path, close to Pecorini fisher village. It is a breathtaking walkway, with an astonishing view on Filicudi and of La Canna Rock. At sunset the sea turns gold, outlining the shape of Alicudi: a perfect volcanic cone. It is an unforgettable natural experience.

Prehistoric Village

From prehistoric times, Filicudi has been inhabited by humans. The prehistoric village, located on Capo Graziano, dates back to III millennium BC. The path runs uphill for 10/15 minutes, leading to a panoramic glade. On the ground, partially covered with grass, there are tens of ancient circular house basements, built with stones. The is the mystical center of the island, and also a wonderful panoramic spot.

The Abandoned Village of Zucco Grande

Following a panoramic path (30 minutes of walk), you will reach the abandoned village of Zucco Grande. This place features a fascinating atmosphere and a wild nature. The old ruins of the houses are built on the side of Filucudi mountain, where the view is breathtaking.

Trekking to Fossa Felci

Trekking Filicudi - Panoramic pathFossa Felci is the top of the mountain of Filicudi (771 mt). The path to get here is long, wild and extremely beautiful. If you decide to go to Fossa Felci, you would need a guide (unless you are an experienced trekker). You also need trekking shoes and plenty of water. The path is unforgettable, featuring splendid views on Aeolian Islands Archipelago. The best moment to visit Fossa Felci is spring, when Filicudi is green and covered with flowers.

Filicudi by the sea

The best way to discover the island of Filicudi is by the sea. You can rent a boat in Filicudi Port or in Pecorini, choosing between a rubber dinghy, right to rech the other islands quickly, or a gozzo, the traditional and elegant fishing boat, ideal to discover Filicudi shores.

Restaurants

Filicudi Yachting Club. Located in Pecorini, it is a restaurant and a night club –the best of the island. The cuisine is delicious: fresh ingredients and excellent wine. Do not miss the crudi, row fish in Mediterranean style. You will eat in a panoramic platform on the sea, surrounded by music. At night the restaurant turns into a disco, with good music and cocktails under the stars.

La Sirena. The most typical restaurant in Filicudi, La Sirena, is located in Pecorini. Here you can enjoy traditional Sicilian food: eggplants, fish and pasta. The speciality is pasta with almonds. The location is cozy and romantic: almost on the beach, close to the fishing boats.
